yay. so eat a book is back in the country and things are up and running properly again. huge thanks to miles for mailing orders whilst i was away. the last few months were awesome (thanks, america!) and can be summarised in the picture below.

kids return/human hands/yntl uk summer tour!

a couple of weeks ago we were lucky enough to spend 8 days playing around the uk with kids return and your neighbour the liar. we had the best time.

endless thanks to kids return (please don't break up) and your neighbour the liar for being awesome bands and such nice guys. was an honour getting to watch them both for 8 nights straight.

endless thanks also goes to neil (miss you), daniel (miss you), dany, david and kieran, dan and his flatmates, the place clyde did karaoke in, chris, dave and adam, owen, danny and thomas, arthur, hannah, elli, thom and all at albany road, everyone who came to any of the gigs, bought a record or said hey (and also to everyone i no doubt missed out).

human hands will be going on a short break until february (maybe a small tour over christmas) as clyde is moving to iceland and i am going to america. we will be releasing split 7"s with your neighbour the liar and bird calls in the coming months and then touring europe and releasing an lp on strictly no capital letters at some point next year.

Daniel Striped Tiger are a punk band formed in Massachusetts. Jay from the band was nice enough to answer some questions i sent him. Standard opening zine question: who’s in the band? Where are you all from? How long have you been playing together? etc etc

Everyone contributes to vocals. We are all originally from various towns on thenorth shore of Massachusetts where we started the band at the end of 2003.Though, nowadays we live in San Francisco, New York City, and Boston which hasmade the frequency of our shows more infrequent than usual, ha.

How did you all meet? Had you played in bands together previously?

We all met through attending shows together on the north shore and playing indifferent bands with one another. Eventually, members of our prior bands allwent off to college in different states and so the four of us decided to start aband together, somewhat out of boredom and to give ourselves something to do onthe weekend.

What influenced you to start playing together?

Deciding to start the band wasn't too difficult as we were all interested in thesame styles of music at the time and had similar ideas of what we wanted to domusically. We were all that ambitious at the start and were usually just tryingto emulate our favorite bands at the time such as Wolves and Sinaloa, hehe.

I saw the ‘if you want you can’ dvd (in fact, I think you guys sent me a copy!) and it seems you formed out of an exciting and really positive scene. Lots of young kids putting on shows in cool spaces, playing in lots of different sounding bands. How important has that scene been to you guys? And in general that DIY mentality?

The north shore will always have a special place in my heart. I grew up going toshows on the weekends there and eventually was playing those same shows. It gaveme a sense of being able to do whatever I wanted to if I put energy into it andmy mind to it. I typically like going to shows where each band is differentstylistically from the others. It makes for a diverse evening and isn't quite asdaunting as knowing that you are going to a "hardcore" show where there will befive bands trying to be as loud as possible one after the other. That sort ofthing can be draining I think. Although most of the bands had their own thinggoing on as far as a genre was concerned, we all had similar mindsets as to aDIY mentality toward putting on shows and what was expected at those shows. Veryfew places we have played over the years can compare to that for us, but when wedo come across places that share a similar asthetic and devotion to the DIYcommunity, it is a real breath of fresh air.

You have been lucky enough to do a European tour and an Australian tour. How awesome were they?

It has been an honor to be invited to perform and bring our ideas to othercountries so far from home. The four of us never thought that large scale tourssuch as going overseas,etc would ever have been possible for a small DIY bandsuch as our own, so we are forever greatful for those opportunities and for thepeople involved in making those tours a reality.

Did you notice any differences in the culture of shows over in these places?

I feel like I say this a lot when faced with this question, but, the age of theaudience varies much much more in other countries I have noticed. Usually whenwe play shows close to home and in the states, the audience ranges roughlybetween 16-25 I would say, however I noticed more people of and older age group,maybe in their thirties coming to shows in Europe and some in Australia. Otherthan that point, bands of all genres and levels are treated like royalty inother countries from cooking them dinner to buying them beer, to finding them aplace to stay at night, to guarantees for the shows. You name it, we pretty muchhad it all without ever asking for a single thing.

You have a new lp out real soon – tell me about it………..

The new LP is titled 'NO DIFFERENCE' and will be released toward the end ofsummer 2010 or very early Fall 2010 on Purepain Sugar in Europe and CleaplateRecords in the states. The making of this record has been unlike anything elsewe have ever done where as we all live in different states and complete oppositecoasts nowadays. There were lots of emailing of riffs and various parts as wellas many "half-band" practices between two or three of us at a time. Whenrecording came around, we all conveiened at Dead Air Studios to record with ourgood buddy Will, and it had been the first time that all four of us had gottenthe chance to play more than half of the songs together as a complete band,haha. Somehow this record actually sounds like we had practiced it a goodhandful of times prior! We put more emphasis on detail and tone and dynamicsthan we ever have before, so I believe I speak for us all when I say this is thebest piece of recorded music we have done together as a band.

Any plans for the future? More touring? Playing more than one show in the UK?!! (please says yes!)…….

Once the LP drops you can expect some traveling. For now though, we will bewaiting. Thanks so much for doing the interiew and also, we have a 7" coming outthis week with The Teenage Cool Kids. It is limited to only 400 copies, so actfast!

.........and there it goes, my only reason to go into the city centre has gone!

today marked what will be my last ever visit to tempest.

the news that tempest records was closing cut me deep, however the endless good memories and frankly silly amount of records i have bought from there over the years will keep it alive!

i remember my first visit; think i was 15 and bought the limp wrist discography, murder of rosa luxemburg album and the first mars volta record! i also remember a brummie guy in a converge tshirt trying to flog me records by awesome-sounding bands whom i had no idea existed!

6 years later, and a decent chunk of my record collection is dedicated to recommendations made by rich!

it was a always a double-edged sword taking a stack of records up to the counter, knowing that as soon as you got chatting to rich, the pile would double in size. great for my love of amazing music. fucking terrible for my bank balance! but this is what was great about tempest.

RIP TEMPEST RECORDS. thanks to all the great people who worked there on all the floors, and all the good people who bought music from there. birmingham will miss you!

p.s. in better news, it sounds like rich will be opening a record stall inside the oasis markets!

Empire! Empire!/What Price, Wonderland?/Pennines - Guildford

i'd been excited for this for a while and the guys in what price were kind enough to give me a lift....
after some extreme squishing into the back of the car and some failed 'canvassing' (see below) attempts we made it to the venue

steve put the show on. he puts tonnes of amazing shows on so if you're from the london area make sure you support his shows! this one was in guildford's finest community centre!

pennines played first. hadn't seen these guys play before, and wasn't disappointed. total american football worship, but i've never been one to complain with that......
for some reason i'd didn't take any photos of their set, but here is one of them soundchecking!

up next were what price, wonderland playing their first show in about a million years. they played a lot of newer jams; hectic and clever post punk, but still emo as fuck.
their set was a perfect example that these guys should play more than once a year, and got me stoked for the split with twisted once it finally sees the light of day!

this was empire! empire!'s only uk show, and after some heavy travelling they were very sleep-deprived! sleep or no sleep they still ruled!

they played a bunch of new songs off their new long play, as well as some old(ish) favourites, and even a new number, which sounded swell!

can't recommend this band more!

doom patrol played first; it had been a while since they'd played, but curtis made sure all hell broke loose pretty quickly; attacking audience members, breaking bottles and rocking the hell out!

naturally their set ended with lots of blood, most of it from curtis' feet

up next was whales. i am an idiot and took loads of great photos of dave as RAW files, which means they will hopefully appear soon........either way dave rocked the house with his ice hockey-inspired noise waves

we (fuck your haircut) played next; it was a super fun show, lots of fun action and weird, unidentified liquids being thrown at us. of course the dudes played the encore!

those noisy pricks stinky wizzleteat closed the night, with what seemed like about a 3 hour set (i ain't complaining!)

once again chaos soon descended upon the sunflower lounge and the night ended with far too many people seeing far too much of jim (i.e. his penis).

stinky ruled and this was a great night! an amazing night actually! and we only had to pay £20 in damages which was a result in itself.

still fully stoked about the night, and being able to pick up a record that i played a small part in.

we left birmingham at around half 4, and made our way onto bristol. this was our (human hands) second show and my first time ever in bristol (i think). we were excited.

feel the excitement.

we arrived at the venue to meet oli and james who were putting the show on, and they fed us some awesome food and we talked about records etc.....

bristol is nice!

facel vega and the sceptres had broken down in london, so stuff was running late, but they managed to rent another van and haul ass to bristol in time.

tanka played first, which was one dude playing ambient drones which were very nice, albeit made me sleepy!

we played next. i think it went pretty good, but can't remember much from it. playing music always seems like a blur.

next up was the sceptres from london. these guys are awesome, and play 70s esque garage punk, reminds me of x-ray spex and x!

facel vega played last. they're easily one of the best uk bands around at the moment. revolution summer esque punk/emo; super intense, super great.

Algernon Cadwallader are some swell dudes from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They play really fun, poppy, emo songs, which make me want to grow an awesome beard and drink beer with my friends. This is a small chat with Peter Helmis from the band.............

Hey man, hows it going?
(PETER): hello. great. up real late preparing for a graduated weekend (4 day tour).

Who’s in the band? How long have you guys been playing music together?
the band consists of joe reinhart, tank bergman, and peter helmis, who is me. this has been the band line up for roughly 2 years. me and joe have been playing in bands together for the past 10 years and we've both been jamming with tank here and there in the last 6 years or so.

That’s one pretty crazy band name you got there? Where did it come from?
algernon cadwallader was the first mayor of yardley, pa which is a suburb of philadelphia and which joe and i are proud to have made the best of growing up in.

Is it difficult telling people what your band is called who aren’t already familiar with your stuff? I bet there has been some pretty hilarious mispronunciations….
i enjoy the funny looks on people's faces. we've heard some different pronunciations but if you follow these easy to remember phonetics you'll be saying algernon cadwallader 'til the cows come home! it's al (like your friend at the organic grocery in silver springs, maryland) jer (like the jersey shore. great program) naan (like the delicious indain flat bread) cad (like cat but with a "d") wall (like the thing that holds you up when you drank too much) uh (like uhhh... i don't know) der (like algernon cadwalla-der).

How was the European tour? You guys seemed to get treated like royalty over here in the UK, with a tonne of sold-out shows…………was it at all overwhelming?
we were'nt sure what to expect when we went europe but what we got completely surpassed our wildest imaginations. the uk shows we're especially crazy and tons of fun. it could have been overwhelming if it wasn't so genuine. we made so many real friends and talked to everyone at the shows it seemed. it was very down to earth and we took none of it for granted. definitely one of the best experiences of all our lives.

Any highlights? Favourite countries, cities or particular shows?
becoming super close with our tourmates, teenage cool kids, and our driver, majty. we shared the whole experience together and every second was worthwhile. i loved the scandinavian vibe. antwerp, belgium was a particularly memorable night spent with the the warmest people walking around the city and drinking great beer. we have to cite our manchester, england show as being the wildest we've ever played. we came close to colapsing the 2 floor and scared people out from the bar beneath us.

I picked up a copy of that 75:24 comp tape. Seems like you guys have a pretty incredible scene going on; people starting loads of great bands, putting on shows, releasing records together etc……how important has that been to you guys? And in general how important is that DIY/community approach to your music?
our scene is peaking right now (or hopefully not, actually). it's been brewing for a long time but within the last couple years there's been new blood surge into it with tons of support and the tape definitely well-documented and called attention to it. it is an amazing and super encouraging enviornment to be in. you will see a lot more material coming from all of these bands this year. the diy approach mostly effects the way we tour and put out records. i don't know what we'd be doing without it but it probably wouldn't be as much fun.

Who are some of your favourite bands in that scene?
too hard.

What are your main influences? Listening to your music, the 90s Midwest emo/indie rock seems like a pretty major influence, but I can also here a lot of straight up pop fun too.
the band started out of love for early emo stuff. we worship the beatles. i think you will notice a lot of new wave influence in our new stuff.

What plans do you guys have now? More touring? New records?
we're doing these weekend tours during the winter but we're putting effort into staying home and writing and recording a new album. hopefully we'll be done by summer and will be able to do some significant touring then.
